OBITUARY - Roy Eugene Finister - March 27, 1941 – May 5, 2021

Mr. Roy Eugene Finster, age 80 of Summerville, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at the Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Finster was born in Summerville, Georgia on March 27, 1941, son of the late Rev. Howard Finster and Pauline Freeman Finster. He was a member of the Silver Hill Baptist Church and like his father, was a folk artist. Mr. Finster enjoyed playing checkers, computer games, repairing old bicycles, reading his bible, artwork, and gospel music. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Randy Finster.

Mr. Finster is survived by his wife, Sharon Finster; son, Michael Finster; step children, Michael and Karen Williams and Lisa and Ben Hayes; sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly and Danny Guinn, Earlene Brown, Gladys Vines and Thelma and G.C. Bradshaw; grandchildren, Dakota Finster, Devan Finster, Jessica Phillips, Kaitlyn Swinford, Brandon Swinford, Christopher Williams, and Emma Williams; 2 great grandchildren, Myra Phillips and Callen Phillips; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services for Mr. Finster will be held Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Ralph Sumner officiating.

The family of Mr. Finster will gather Tuesday at the Coffman Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 P.M. until the service hour.

The family of Mr. Finster asks that anyone attending the services, to please follow the CDC guidelines as it pertains to social distancing, social gatherings and facemasks.

Roy won the Majors Division in 2005 Tennessee State Open. Howard Finster (December 2, 1916 – October 22, 2001) was an American artist and Baptist minister from Georgia. He claimed to be inspired by God to spread the gospel through the design of his swampy land into Paradise Garden, a folk art sculpture garden with over 46,000 pieces of art. His creations include outsider art, naïve art, and visionary art. Finster came to widespread notice in the 1980s with his album cover designs for R.E.M. and Talking Heads.
